Old Friends

Seen Better days...

"The man with the boots does not
mind where he places his foot."
-Irish Proverb

"My optimism wears heavy boots
and is loud."
-Henry Rollins

I've had these bad boys for 25 years. My dad bought them for me in 1983 to replace a crappy pair of Moon Boots. To this day probably one of the nicest things he has ever done for me and that is saying a lot.

I have lost track of how many sets of laces and liners I have gone through.
If you click on the photo and look at the toes you can see that they're shot.

I'm not sure why it is that our footwear tends to personify us more than any other article of our apparel. When soldiers lose a comrade they will march past his empty boots and salute. Of all the outrageous excesses of the Marcos Regime it was Imelda's 1060 pairs of shoes that everyone (at least in the states) remembers.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
And without good footwear, you're going nowhere.

Good boots are like good friends. The better they are, the more you can count on them. They can be taken for granted without being insulted by it. But then again boots are inanimate objects and don't have feelings.

What the @#$!$% am I talking about anyway?

I've gotten a lot of traffic (Like double) lately from people looking for fish house designs but none of these freeloading sunkinthaditches comment on my posts. Is nobody commenting because the quality of my posts is crap, or is the quality of my posts crap because nobody comments? I guess either way if I had to ask it isn't a good thing. According to my stats my most loyal reader is the vi@gr@worm robot who hits my RSS feed like 6000 times a day when he's not busy lighting up my custom 404 page with obscene (and non-existent) URLs.

Sorry this post melted down. I really had high hopes for it, too.

But then again what do you care, whoever you are?
You weren't reading this anyway, were you?

Web Site changes and Friday Music

Hope you all like the new navigation and the rotating header images. The navigation is all CSS and works in IE 6, IE 7 and Firefox. Haven't tested in Safari. If any Ginkgo biloba Tofu eating, soy chai latte drinking, VW Jetta driving Mac users stumble across this web site, please drop a line and let me know if it looks OK.

Home grown music Friday - "Rain on the Trailer" by the Glenrustles.
These guys don't have a video to post.

BUY THEIR CD! http://www.olyellerband.com//contact.html

Bandwidth & Diskspace

I'm getting "up there" in terms of my available disk space with my current hosting package. In an effort to make room I am going to make use of services such as google video. What that means to the four people who read this blog is that instead of seeing an embedded object that is hosted somewhere within the same root directory as the serving page, you will see an embedded object coming from somewhere else, namely google video.

In other words you shouldn't notice any difference, unless you are running Internet explorer with a high security profile.

By the way, why are 60% of you using internet explorer? You really should try Firefox.

While I am on the subject, which one of you is using Linux?
I am watching you through the screen, that's why they call it a monitor.

OK, nerd-talk is over, talk again soon.

April & May 2006 photos

I finally got some of this year's photos posted to the photoalbum, including recent ones from Joshua's third birthday party. Now if I can just get around to posting the photos from his second birthday party I'll be in good shape.

Idle Hands

I have been back from vacation for quite some time - I have lots to post and many pictures to add to the photo album. The problem was that the Adding process was very tedious before. I decided to de-suckify my photo album and switch to a flash photo album that uses XML to load images and comments. It still needs a little work but I am mostly done with it. Check it out if you care to.

Iced Mud

Observation:
A Terry-boo(tm) iced coffee is not as good as Starbucks when it is made with Folgers...

Reality:
I am continuing in my low-budget endeavor by taking lunch at my desk. I didn't write a blessed thing yesterday but rather spent my lunch hour surfing, which is something tht I don't do when I am at Starbucks. I did find a new BWCA-related web log called the dharma blog. Add to that Lileks, Seth Godin, Slashdot and the Register, and you pretty much have my reading list. I do skim the top headlines at CNN and get my local news from the Strib. For pinoy headlines I use INQ7.

I like the dharma blog because A) the author seems to be on a similar wavelength in terms of what we appreciate about the outdoors, and B) He's got a lot of back material for me to read. Since the early stages of parenthood have limited my ability to get out to the woods, his writing is a good fix for what I'm jonesing for.

On a related note I think that this will be the weekend that I set up the tent in the back yard and start broadening the child's horizons. Also, I need to set a date with the guys for our all-day fishing trip (Maybe either 7/2 or 7/9). For long term, I need to set in motion the plan for acquiring a canoe. It looks to me like the only way I'll be able to swing it is if I liquidate the truck and get a beater (Not that the truck isn't much more than a year or two away from being a beater now). The canoe that I have my eye on? It's right here.

OK, this has turned into a to-do list instead of a posting. I will write more soon.

Been gone

I have been doing a bit of off line writing which I may post later. It's been a heck of a month for any of you familiar with my mother's health issues. Hopefully I will have more later.
