Fish House Design
In my previous post I was not exactly truthful when I said that the design specifications were "contained entirely in my own head" - My notebook operates as an extension of my head. While these aren't really designs (You wont find any measurements or list of supplies here) here is a peek at my concept drawings. The fish house turned out pretty close to this except that I haven't had a chance to do the windows yet and I need to add a second vent.
I can't wait to get back out in it.

Won't take you far
Here is kind of a postscript for the trip, three bulleted lists I made in my notebook while watching the autumn sunset light up the tamaracks on my last evening in the BWCAW. WHAT WENT RIGHT:- Beautiful, rain-free fall days
- Beautiful fall colors:
-The birches still had about 15% of their leaves, the scrub oaks were hanging on, and the tamaracks look like God plucked each one, dipped it in gold and set it back down again. - Exercised good judgment:
- I knew when to swallow my pride and turn around.
- Re-learned something about myself I had forgotten:
-I am quite strong... But without conditioning, strength won't take you far.
WHAT WENT WRONG:- Pack overloaded:
-I brought too much unnecessary crap. - Body overloaded:
-I need to lose at least 25# (More like 50) before I try this again. - Body out of shape:
-The primary means by which to lose the above-mentioned weight should be via exercise
- Equipment failures:
-Boots fell apart -Stove was not running 100% efficiently (Didn't test it out beforehand) - Wrong/inappropriate equipment:
-Heavy base camping tent, no water pump - Underestimated the trail:
-The trail had the element of surprise - it had been waiting for me for 300,000 years* *(Not sure what I meant by that!)
WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS:(Updated on Sunday in the Ely coffee shop)- On Echo Trail:
-A family of Bald Eagles - On the trail in:
-I kicked up a rabbit -I passed within the vicinity of a skunk. - In the campgrounds:
-Panhandling whiskey jacks and red squirrels -2 Ducks of unknown species (Didn't look like mallards) -An otter swam up and briefly spied on me through the weeds -What appeared to be a beaver towing a log across the lake (What else would do something like that?) - On the trail out:
-I kicked up a grouse -I met a visibly shaken teenage boy who spent a sleepless night in a nearby campsite after a bear entered the campground, stomped around and snorted around the young man's hanging food pack.

Daddy's Lunch for Tomorrow!
The title of this post was something my wife wrote on a different post-it note (Not pictured). It was meant to designate an item in our refrigerator as my lunch for the following day. I kept the post-it and used it as cube art. It inspired this doodle, obviously with a different context: Labels: Family, Moleskine, post-its

Belated 07-07-07
So where were you on July 07? The wife and I were at a colleague's wedding at the Lake Como Band shell. I didn't bring my digital camera but I did bring my mental camera, and 'snapped' this mental image of the boat rental area. I can't draw as well as I can remember, but this sketch does serve for me as a reminder of what I experienced. NOT PICTURED: The heat of the sun on my navy blue suit (What was I thinking?), The smell of the algae coming off the lake, the feel of wife's fingers in the back of my hair as she patiently watched me knock out the outlines (I shaded this sometime later), a kid catching a 'hammer handle' northern pike off of another dock (a little to the left of the area I chose to sketch). Belated July 4th
Happy Independence Day to all of you, 5 days after the fact. We had a great 4th - went on a picnic at Lake of the Isles and went to our town's fireworks display, which lasted for 30 minutes. Eric over at the Ethereal Garage has a good fourth of July post including a fireworks video in which you can clearly hear the devious laugh of his three year old. They start 'em young up there in northern MN! Here is a sketch I did on July 04 of the Bryant building, while parked at 31st & Hennepin Avenue. The wife was inside a nearby Famous Dave's procuring our picnic feast. I was parked facing northbound, so this is the western side of Hennepin as seen from the driver's side window. Espresso Royale - Dinkytown
Further proof as to why I work with computers instead of pencils.I drank a doppio espresso and whipped this out with a .7 mm mechanical Ticonderoga. My son sat next to me, sipped on an apple juicy juice box and colored with fat Crayolas. In retrospect I wish I still had what he was working on instead.Labels: Coffee, Moleskine

Our American selves
I doodled this on 04/07/07 and wrote the following:
"Planning my outdoor excursions feels not unlike a bank robber, meditating on his next heist. I am putting together the gear and the expertise and anticipating the right moment to pull off my next caper. Truth be told, aside from a canoe I really have all the gear that I need. My planned purchases are primarily creature comforts. To make life more convenient in some cases, and more fun in others.
On this spring day the nip of winter is still in the air, to serve as a reminder that into our lives a little snow must fall. But the trees are biding their time like petulant teenagers, waiting for their drivers licenses. Their buds are like a billion little pimples, all of which will erupt in one giant pubescent explosion in about two more weeks. That's when every living thing under the sun (& under the waves) will become obsessed with reproduction, not unlike our American selves.
When it comes to birds, fish, wolves and deer, I confess to being a romantic. I want to see the guy get the girl."

Dropping eaves
I visited my mother's grave last night for the first time since winter. The summer drought had yellowed the new sod. I weeded the crabgrass and the creeping charlie away from the headstone and considered how pleased she would be that I was spending my visit gardening, even in this limited form. My mother was a simple person. She didn't have much to say about politics, war, crime & punishment, or the multitude of social issues that we face in the dawn of the 21st century. But weeding crabgrass was something that she could really get behind. I wanted to talk to her but I admit that my own lack of understanding in the way of how this world and the next interact with eachother left me feeling unsure of myself. I began speaking as though I were leaving a message on an answering machine belonging to someone I did not know. "Just thought I'd stop by," I started, testing the water. It seemed no more ackward than talking to her when she had been alive and unconscious, so I continued. "I know that you're not here, but on the off-chance that God lets you listen in, I thought-" My disclaimer was stopped cold when by chance I glanced up at the nearby cross. It is actually a bell tower, about a three-story high structure. Perched on the head of the cross was a huge crow, looking down at me. He was holding his wings away from his body in order to regulate his body temperature in the heat of the summer evening. It gave the appearance that he was cupping his wings to his ears in order to hear me better. I opened my mouth to speak and then closed it again and swallowed. The whole scene left me speechless. After a momentary staredown another crow flew by. My would-be eavesdropper hopped off into the air and flew away with his mate, leaving me at the foot of the cross, to write this down. God's Phone Number
'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'Jeremiah 33:3Lotis Key-Kabigting portraying the prophet Jeremiahat Bethany Baptist church on June 27, 2006. Click to enlarge ( Opens in a new window): Jeremiah is known as " The weeping prophet." It is one thing to read words on a page and know that 2700 years ago a man suffered scorn, ridicule and imprisonment, all at the hands of those he was sent to save, simply for delivering a message. It is quite another to hear his voice brought back from the dead, his anguished and tormented sobs filling the ears of an opulent 21st century audience who could do nothing but squirm uneasily in their seats as the prophet's grieved heart was layed bare before them. It is one thing to read words on a page and know that God is a jealous God, who will repay the unfaithful with perfect and undiluted justice. It is quite another to hear that righteous anger manifested into an audible sound, even if the delivery method is a mere human voice and only a shadow of the wrathful voice to come.
